Commentary

Ah, animal cruelty! I felt the joke was funny enough to justify the much darker premise for this one. It was a riff on the Disney trope where wild animals would rally around the singing protagonist (usually a princess). Bastich, being a Disney connoisseur, knows how to wield this power to get what he most desires.

Every once in a while, I would try drawing a completely wordless comic like this. I'm no Sergio Aragonés, but I think this one made its point.

Transcript

TITLE The Bastich By Hart

PANEL 1 (Bastich is at a book store reading a coffee table book entitled THE ART OF DISNEY as cartoon hearts float around him)

PANEL 2 (A though bubble appears with an empty coin purse and a fly buzzing around. Bastich has no money to buy the book.)

PANEL 3 (The coin purse is replaced with a light bulb and the fly and though bubble both burst. Bastich has an idea!)

PANEL 4 (Bastich walks around outside and starts to whistle.)

PANEL 5 (Wild animals emerge from the bushes, attracted by Bastich's song. A rabbit, a squirrel and a quail are first.)

PANEL 6 (More wild animals emerge. Another rabbit, a duck, a mouse..)

PANEL 7 (Bastich walks in silhouette as a large menagerie of animals follow along.)

PANEL 8 (Bastich walks past a sign into a building, still surrounded by animals.)

PANEL 9 (Later, Bastich walks out of the building alone, still whistling and counting a large wad of cash. The sign is revealed to say ANIMAL TESTING CENTER)
